About

Custom Ornamental Railings in Tacoma

Tacoma has some of the finest period housing stock in the region, and ornamental railings belong in those houses in a way they rarely do elsewhere. A North End craftsman or a Stadium District Victorian was designed for exactly this kind of forged detail.

We source the forged components, then weld and finish every piece in our Kent shop, which lets us match a period pattern closely, echo an existing railing elsewhere in the house, or design something new that reads as though it has always been there.

The work spans simple ornamental, where a few forged details lift a clean railing, through to luxury commissions with hand painting that make the staircase the defining feature of the home.

Two Levels of Ornamental

Simple Ornamental or Luxury Ornamental

Two levels of ornamental work, both suited to Tacoma’s mix of period and modern homes.

Simple Ornamental Railings

Simple ornamental adds period appropriate character economically: forged collars, a shaped newel, or a scrolled panel against a clean run. It suits a Tacoma remodel that wants to respect the house without a full restoration budget.

Luxury Ornamental Railings

Luxury ornamental is a bespoke commission, with sweeping forged scrollwork, sculpted florals, and hand painted or gilded detail. In a restored Victorian or a grand North End home it is the piece that completes the interior.

Where They Go

Ornamental Railings Throughout a Tacoma Home

Two settings account for most ornamental work in the city’s period and modern houses.

Interior Railings

The main staircase is the heart of a period Tacoma home, and forged detail there does more for its character than almost any other single element, with landings and gallery rails carrying the pattern through the upper floor of the larger North End houses.

Exterior Railings

Porch railings and entry steps take ornamental work outdoors, specified and finished for the salt tinged air off Commencement Bay so the detail does not quietly corrode away. Set back from the water, properly finished steel handles the coastal damp well too.

Materials

Steel and Aluminum, or Brass and Bronze

Two material routes, and in a coastal city full of historic housing both the look and the exposure matter.

Steel and Aluminum Railings

Forged steel components are the traditional choice for period ornamental work, holding scrollwork and sculpted detail much as the original ironwork in these houses did. Ornamental aluminum cannot corrode in the salt air, the practical material for porch and exterior railings close to the bay.

Brass and Bronze Accents Railings

Brass and bronze accents suit period interiors particularly well, warming dark steel on florals, collars, and cap rails the way original Victorian ironwork often did. In a restored North End home they help a new railing sit convincingly among original fixtures rather than announcing itself as recent.

Finishes

Powder Coating or Hand Painted Finishes

Finishing is chosen per project, and for a period Tacoma home the hand applied route is how this work was traditionally completed.

Powder Coat Finishes

Powder coating gives an even, hard wearing color and is the practical specification for porch and exterior railings facing the salt tinged air off Commencement Bay, where a hand applied finish would need more attention than most owners want to give it.

Hand Painted, Leaf, and Patina

Hand applied finishing suits a period interior. Florals, leaves, and scroll ends are picked out element by element, following the color scheme the house was originally decorated in, and gold leaf, silver leaf, or a rubbed patina gives forged detail the depth found in original Victorian ironwork.

Architects and New Builds

Working With Tacoma Architects, Designers, and New Construction

We work with Tacoma architects, restoration specialists, and homeowners, and are experienced at matching period detail. Shop drawings go out for approval before fabrication, which matters when a piece has to sit in a historic interior.

On a restoration or a new build we coordinate with your contractor around the stair, measuring to finished treads so a period appropriate railing fits as though it were original to the house.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Hand painted detailing is applied element by element, so the colors can follow a scheme documented from the house's history, drawn from surviving original finishes, or chosen to complement your current interior. We work out the palette with you before any finishing begins.

Interior railings are unaffected. For porch and exterior work close to Commencement Bay we specify for the salt, using ornamental aluminum where its corrosion resistance helps or steel finished through a multi-step process, with exterior grade finishing over any hand applied detail.

Simple ornamental keeps a clean structure and adds period appropriate character through selected forged details. Luxury ornamental is designed specifically for your staircase, with sweeping scrollwork, sculpted florals, and hand painted or gilded finishing. Both suit a Tacoma home; the luxury tier involves far more design and hand finishing work.

Yes, and it is some of our favorite work. We can work from photographs or surviving fragments to match a historic pattern closely, echo a railing elsewhere in the house, or design something new that is faithful to the period. Because assembly and finishing are both done in our own shop, that kind of matching is well within what we do.
