About

Modern Railings for Tacoma Homes

Tacoma has views worth protecting, and a modern railing is how you keep them. On a North End deck looking over Commencement Bay, glass or cable holds the outlook that a heavier balustrade would cut into sections.

The salt air changes the specification considerably. Ordinary hardware corrodes near the water, and on a minimal railing there is no ornament to disguise a rusting fixing, so the fittings have to be specified for the exposure from the outset.

We design, weld, assemble, and finish each system in our Kent shop, across glass, cable, and metal, with the hardware chosen for how close the property sits to the bay.

Railing Types

Glass, Cable, or Metal

Three systems, and in a coastal city the choice weighs the view against what salt air does to the hardware.

Glass Railings

Glass panels hold a bay view completely intact and block wind on an exposed deck, though on a coastal property they collect salt spray and need washing more often than most owners expect.

Slim horizontal cable stair railings with gray posts and a wood top rail in Tacoma, WA.

Cable Railings

Tensioned marine grade stainless cable nearly disappears against a water backdrop and asks for far less cleaning than glass, which makes it the practical coastal choice.

Metal Bar and Panel Railings

Metal bar infill, run vertically or horizontally, and laser cut panels give more presence and more privacy, useful on a Tacoma lot where the neighboring house is closer than the water.

Where They Go

Modern Railings Inside and Out

Both settings suit these systems, and proximity to the bay drives the exterior specification.

Interior Railings

Open stairs, landings, and mezzanine edges take glass or cable, and in a renovated Tacoma house a minimal railing against original woodwork reads as a deliberate contrast rather than a mismatch.

Exterior Railings

Decks, balconies, and terraces take the same systems outdoors, where the salt tinged air off Commencement Bay is relentless. Close to the water, marine grade stainless is the correct specification rather than an upgrade.

Materials

Powder Coated Metal, or Stainless and Glass

On the coast the material decision is largely about which hardware survives the salt looking new.

Powder Coated Steel and Aluminum Railings

Powder coated steel and aluminum give a precise matte finish, with aluminum the safer choice anywhere the salt air reaches since it cannot rust regardless of how exposed the deck is.

Stainless Steel and Glass Railings

Marine grade stainless with glass is the right specification near the bay. Standard stainless will spot within a few seasons in salt air, and on a minimal railing that corrosion is immediately visible with no ornament to hide it.

Neighborhoods

Modern Railings Across Tacoma

We install modern railings from the North End, Stadium District, and Proctor through Old Town and Ruston and out toward University Place, specified for each property’s distance from the salt.

Architects and New Builds

Working With Tacoma Architects, Designers, and New Construction

We work with Tacoma architects, designers, and homeowners, issuing shop drawings for approval before fabrication and coordinating the finish with other exterior metalwork on the property.

On a renovation or new build we measure to finished treads and deck surfaces rather than framing, which matters more on a minimal railing where there is no ornament to absorb an uneven reveal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Glass gives the most complete view and has the practical benefit of blocking wind on an exposed deck, which matters on the bluff. Cable asks for far less cleaning and nearly disappears at any distance. Some Tacoma projects use both, glass on the windward side and cable elsewhere.

More often than inland, and it is worth knowing before choosing it. A coastal deck collects salt spray alongside rain spotting and dust, and glass shows all of it. Cable or metal is the substantially lower maintenance choice if regular washing is not something you want to take on.

In a renovation they often work extremely well. A minimal glass or cable railing set against original craftsman or Victorian woodwork reads as a deliberate contemporary intervention rather than a mismatch. The failure mode is a railing caught halfway between period and modern, which is why we would rather commit to one direction clearly.

Close to the water, yes. Standard stainless grades spot within a few seasons in salt air, and on a minimal railing that corrosion is fully visible since there is no ornament to disguise it. The cost difference is modest against the railing as a whole and it is what keeps the hardware looking new in a decade.
