About

Modern Railings for Seattle Homes and Businesses

A modern railing is defined by what it leaves out. No scrollwork, no applied ornament, just clean lines, even spacing, and hardware that disappears into the design. Done properly it opens a Seattle stairwell up rather than dividing it.

That restraint is unforgiving, which is the point worth understanding. On a minimal railing every weld, every post spacing, and every joint is visible, so the tolerances have to be tighter than on a decorative piece where detail hides the transitions.

We design, weld, assemble, and finish each system in our Kent shop, across glass, cable, and metal, so the railing suits the specific stair or deck rather than arriving as a stock kit cut to length.

Railing Types

Glass, Cable, or Metal

Modern railings come down to three types, and the right one depends on the view, the setting, and how much maintenance you want.

Glass Railings

Glass panels give the most open result, holding the view almost completely intact. The choice for a Seattle deck facing water or a stairwell where light needs to travel between floors.

Cable Railings

Tensioned cable runs horizontally between posts, nearly disappearing at a distance while keeping the structure visible. It suits decks and interior stairs where a lighter, more industrial line is wanted.

Metal Bar and Panel Railings

Metal bar infill, run vertically or horizontally, plus perforated or laser cut panels, give a modern line with more presence than cable, and more privacy than glass. A strong fit for balconies and street facing runs.

Where They Go

Modern Railings Inside and Out

Modern systems work in both settings, though the specification changes considerably between them.

Interior Railings

Staircases, landings, and mezzanine edges are where modern railings do their best work in a Seattle home, keeping an open plan genuinely open. Glass and cable both let light travel between floors in houses that see little of it for months at a time.

Exterior Railings

Decks, balconies, and rooftop terraces take the same systems outdoors, where the specification tightens considerably. Everything is finished for constant Seattle rain, and near saltwater at Alki or on the Sound we move to marine grade stainless hardware.

Materials

Powder Coated Metal, or Stainless and Glass

Modern railings live or die on their finish, since there is no ornament to distract from a mark or a run of corrosion.

Powder Coated Steel and Aluminum Railings

Powder coated steel and aluminum give the clean matte black or bronze that defines most modern railings. Steel carries longer spans with slimmer posts, while aluminum stays lighter and cannot rust, which matters on a Seattle exterior that stays damp for months.

Stainless Steel and Glass Railings

Stainless steel and glass are the premium route, with stainless standoffs, posts, and cable fittings that hold a bright or brushed finish for decades. Near saltwater we specify marine grade stainless, since ordinary stainless will eventually spot in that air.

Architects and New Builds

Working With Seattle Architects, Designers, and New Construction

A good deal of our modern work comes through Seattle architects and designers, where the railing is drawn into the plans from the start. We work from drawings and issue shop drawings for approval before fabrication.

On new construction we measure to finished treads and finished deck surfaces rather than framing, which matters more on a minimal railing than a decorative one, since there is no ornament to disguise a gap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not if the posts and spacing are right. Cable is under real tension, and the load has to be carried by properly sized end posts with intermediate supports at the correct spacing. That engineering is where cheap cable installations fail. We size and space the structure for the run rather than fitting a generic kit.

Less than people expect on the metal, more than expected on the glass. Powder coated and stainless components need little beyond occasional cleaning. Glass panels show water spots and fingerprints and want regular washing, which is worth knowing before you choose them for an exterior Seattle deck that faces months of rain.

Often very well, particularly in a renovated one. A minimal glass or cable railing against original woodwork creates a deliberate contrast that reads as a considered renovation rather than a mismatch. What tends not to work is a half measure, a railing that is neither clearly period nor clearly modern. We would rather commit to one direction.

It comes down to the view and the upkeep. Glass gives the most open result and is the choice when a view matters, but it needs regular cleaning, especially outdoors in Seattle. Cable nearly disappears at a distance and asks for very little maintenance beyond occasional tension checks. Metal bar infill and panels give more presence and more privacy than either, and the bars can run vertically, horizontally, or in a mixed pattern. We look at the setting and tell you which actually suits it.
