About Deck Railings

Deck Railings in Tacoma, WA

Tacoma has two kinds of deck. There are the bluff decks above Commencement Bay where the water is the entire point, and there are the yard decks behind craftsman and Victorian houses where the railing has to suit a hundred-year-old home.

We measure on site, fabricate in our Kent shop, and install with our own crew, in metal, glass, or cable. On a period house we can reproduce a pattern that fits the architecture; on a bluff deck we build for the view and the salt.

Near the water the salt-tinged air is hard on ordinary hardware, so fixings and finishes are specified for the exposure rather than chosen generically.

Why the Railing Matters

A Period House Needs a Railing That Fits It

Tacoma’s housing stock is the city’s real asset, and a stock aluminum railing on the back of a 1915 craftsman is immediately wrong in a way that is hard to unsee. The proportions are off, the profiles are modern, and it reads as something attached rather than something built.

Fabricated metal solves that, because the picket spacing, the profile, and the top rail can be drawn to suit the house. On the bluff decks the problem inverts entirely, and the goal becomes getting the railing out of the way of the water, which is where glass and cable take over.

What We Build

Deck Railing Materials

Three materials, and in Tacoma the right one depends as much on the age of the house as the view.

Metal Deck Railings

The most versatile, and the only one that can genuinely suit a period home. Powder-coated steel in traditional picket or pattern work for a craftsman or Victorian, or flat-bar modern for a remodel. Aluminum where salt exposure is the main concern.

Glass Deck Railings

For the bluff and waterfront decks. Tempered panels keep the bay outlook whole and cut the wind considerably on an exposed deck above the water, though salt spray means they need washing more often than an inland deck would.

Cable Deck Railings

Marine grade stainless cable between slim posts, largely invisible against the water and far easier to keep clean than glass in salt air. It suits the modern remodels and the newer builds around the West End and University Place.

Deck Railings Across Tacoma

In the North End, Stadium District, and Proctor, the period homes call for metal railings detailed to match the architecture, and a modern system there usually looks out of place.

Along the bluff and in Old Town and Ruston, decks face Commencement Bay and the outlook governs, so glass and cable dominate and everything gets finished for the salt. Through the South End and out toward Fircrest and University Place, a mix of ages brings a mix of both.

Two Directions

Two Directions for a Tacoma Deck Railing

Both are built in the same shop to the same standard, and in Tacoma the choice usually follows the age of the house.

Modern Deck Railings

Slim metal, glass, or cable with clean horizontal lines, which suits the bluff decks, the modern remodels, and the newer builds. On a deck above the water it is the only sensible direction, since the point is to see past the railing.

Ornamental Deck Railings

Where Tacoma’s period homes come into their own. Shaped pickets, scrollwork, and pattern work in fabricated metal, drawn to suit a craftsman or Victorian and finished for the coastal damp. This is some of our favorite work in the city.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, provided the framing is sound. We measure the deck as built, which matters on an older Tacoma property where decks and drawings rarely agree, fabricate to those dimensions, and install in place of the old railing. The deck stays and only the railing changes.

Glass gives the most complete view and blocks the most wind, which is a real benefit on an exposed bluff. Cable needs far less cleaning, which matters when salt spray is landing on it regularly. Some Tacoma decks use both, with glass on the windward end and cable along the rest.

Ordinary hardware will, faster than most people expect. Close to the water we favor aluminum, which cannot rust, and marine grade stainless for fixings and cable fittings, then finish steel through a multi-step process where ornamental detail calls for steel. The fixings are where salt does its damage first.

Yes, and it is some of our favorite work here. We draw the picket spacing, profile, and top rail to suit the house rather than adapting a stock design, and can reproduce a pattern from photographs or from ironwork elsewhere on the property. Because we fabricate by hand in our own shop, that kind of matching is well within what we do.
