About Deck Railings
Deck Railings in Seattle, WA
Most of the year a Seattle deck gets looked at more than it gets used. From October through spring you see it through the slider, and what you are actually looking at is the railing, because it sits at eye level and the deck boards do not.
We measure at your deck, build the railing in our Kent shop, and install it with our own crew, in metal, glass, or cable. That matters on the stepped and wrapped decks common on Seattle’s sloped lots, where a stock kit leaves you with filler panels at every angle.
Whatever you choose, it is finished to get through the wet months without streaking down the posts or needing a repaint each spring.
Why the Railing Matters
The Railing Is What You See From Inside
Stand at the back door of a Seattle house in February. A solid picket run reads as a fence across the window and cuts the yard off from the room. Swap it for cable or glass and the same opening gives you the trees, the water, or the neighbor’s cedar instead of a row of verticals.
The other half is upkeep. A wood railing in this climate wants scraping and recoating on a cycle you will resent by year three. Powder-coated metal, glass, and cable skip that entirely, which is the practical argument for fabricated railings here regardless of the style you land on.
What We Build
Deck Railing Materials
Metal, glass, and cable each answer a different question on a Seattle deck. Here is how they compare.
Metal Deck Railings
The workhorse and the most flexible. Powder-coated steel suits almost any Seattle deck and takes both flat-bar modern designs and ornamental patterns. Aluminum is the pick on a deck that stays damp under tree cover, since it cannot rust at all.
Glass Deck Railings
For a deck with something worth looking at, whether that is Puget Sound from a Magnolia bluff or just a good backyard. Tempered panels keep the outlook whole and knock down the wind on an exposed deck. Framed costs less; frameless reads cleanest.
Cable Deck Railings
Thin stainless runs between metal posts, largely disappearing from ten feet away while still letting air through. It costs less than glass, suits hillside and tree-lined lots across West Seattle and Ravenna, and needs little more than an occasional tension check.
Local Experts
Deck Railings Across Seattle
Seattle decks vary more by terrain than by neighborhood. On the bluffs and hillsides in Magnolia, West Seattle, and Queen Anne, elevated decks look over water or the city, and glass and cable get chosen for the view.
In Ballard, Fremont, and Wallingford, the newer townhomes and remodels lean modern with slim black metal or cable. Older homes in Madison Park, Mount Baker, and Leschi often take ornamental metal that suits the architecture, and near the water at Alki we finish everything for the extra salt in the air.

Two Directions
Two Directions for a Seattle Deck Railing
Nearly every deck railing project lands in one of two camps. Both are fabricated by the same hands and carry identical weather protection.
Modern Deck Railings
Where most Seattle decks land now. Narrow black profiles, frameless glass, or closely spaced cable, run horizontally so the eye goes to the deck and whatever sits beyond it. It suits townhomes, remodels, and mid-century houses particularly well.
Ornamental Deck Railings
For the period homes the city has plenty of. Scrolls, shaped pickets, and pattern work in fabricated metal, finished for outdoor use. On a Queen Anne or a Madison Park classic it gives the deck a railing that belongs to the house rather than fighting it.

Posted on Google Kristina G.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We're so thrilled with our new stair railings! Custom Railings WA and Mike's team did a high quality job from start to finish. We got the black powder coat finish with hemlock handrail in natural stain, which looks so elegant (see attached photos). The powder coat finish is really attractive, and we like that it's durable and not easily scratched. We were a little nervous that the wood color/characteristics on the top rail might turn out to be inconsistent across such a long run of railing, but the hand rails on all of the railings match beautifully. Thank you, Mike and team for taking such great care of us! Our new stairs are the perfect touch for our new farmhouse.Posted on Google Adele FesanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We used this company for the second time, and this was our first time ordering railing for an outdoor deck. The service was absolutely outstanding from start to finish. Communication was excellent, the team was easy to work with, and everything was completed exactly on schedule. The installation crew was highly professional, respectful, and left the area clean after completing the job. It was truly a pleasure working with a company that operates with such care and professionalism. The quality of the railing is top-notch — a very high-end product that exceeded our expectations. We would highly recommend this company and will definitely use them again in the future.Posted on Google Leyla HasanovaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We ordered glass railings for our parents’ home in Seattle. We were choosing between two options, glass or modern metal railings, and in the end we decided to go with glass. We’re extremely happy with that choice. The team helped us understand the differences, guided us through the design, and completed the installation on time. The railings look amazing. Great experience overall!Posted on Google Zamina BabayevaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. From the first day, they were professional and easy to work with. Mike always replied quickly, and the team made sure every detail was just how I wanted. In the end, we got beautiful glass railings that fit perfectly with our modern home in Bellevue. Thank you, Custom Railings WA, for making the whole process smooth and enjoyable!Posted on Google J BTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had such a good experience getting outdoor railings for my front concrete steps and for my stone steps in the back garden. I had put off doing this for so long and thought that railings might detract from the aesthetic look of my yard, but I was so wrong. I absolutely love my new railings, and loved working with all the guys who came out - to measure, to bend the metal and dig post holes, and finally to install the finished railings. Thank you!Posted on Google Jill SprattTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had a wonderful experience with Mike and his crew at Custom Railings WA. They replaced our outdated railing with a new custom designed railing that fit our dreams and our budget. Communication was always clear and timely. They even worked around the chaotic schedule of other contractors working on our bigger remodeling project that impacted when the railing could be installed. Very Happy with our railing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which parts of Seattle do you cover?
CustomRailingsWA2026-09-28T23:06:18-07:00The whole city, from Ballard and Green Lake through the central neighborhoods to West Seattle and the shoreline at Alki. We are based in Kent just to the south, so getting anywhere in Seattle is straightforward, and near saltwater we adjust the finish and hardware accordingly.
Can you put a new railing on our existing deck?
CustomRailingsWA2026-09-28T23:05:39-07:00Yes, and it is a common job. Provided the framing is still solid, we take dimensions off the deck as it stands, build the new railing to those numbers, and swap it for the old one. Nothing about the deck surface changes, which makes this the least expensive route to making a tired deck look current again.
Will a metal deck railing rust through a Seattle winter?
CustomRailingsWA2026-09-28T22:25:25-07:00Not when it is finished for it. Steel is primed before it is powder-coated, aluminum goes anywhere a deck holds damp or never sees sun, and the joints are sealed against standing water. Done that way a railing comes through a long wet season without marking or bleeding rust down the posts.
Metal, glass, or cable for a Seattle deck?
CustomRailingsWA2026-09-28T22:23:29-07:00What the deck looks onto decides it. Where there is something worth seeing, glass preserves the whole outlook and knocks down wind better than anything else, while cable gets you most of that openness for a lower figure and lets air pass through. Where the deck faces a fence line, or where you want decorative detail, metal is the more adaptable answer and the easiest to forget about once it is up. We go through the three of them standing on your deck.
