About Deck Railings

Deck Railings in Medina, WA

On a Medina waterfront property the deck exists for one reason, and the railing either protects that reason or interrupts it. Everything else about the deck is secondary to whether you can see the water from a seated position.

We measure on site, fabricate in our Kent shop, and install with our own crew, working from architect or landscape drawings where there are any. Frameless glass, slim metal, and stainless cable are all built to the same standard and coordinated with the estate’s other metalwork.

Lakeside humidity is constant rather than seasonal here, so hardware and finishes are specified for it from the outset rather than upgraded later.

Why the Railing Matters

The Railing Decides What You See

A railing on a Medina deck sits directly in the sightline between the seating and the lake. At standing height a picket run is a series of interruptions; from a chair it can obscure the shoreline entirely. Frameless glass keeps the outlook continuous, which on a property bought for the water is the only acceptable result.

Detailing is the other consideration. On an estate deck every bracket, standoff, and post base is visible and examined, so the hardware has to be as considered as the glass it holds. That is where a specified system separates from a supplied one.

What We Build

Deck Railing Materials

Three materials, and on a Medina deck the brief usually favors whichever intrudes least on the outlook.

Metal Deck Railings

Slim custom metal for terraces and garden-level decks where transparency matters less than matching the home. Powder-coated to the estate’s palette and detailed to coordinate with gates, fencing, and other specified metalwork on the property.

Modern framed glass deck railings installed on an upper-level terrace of a contemporary home in Medina, WA.

Glass Deck Railings

The default on a Medina waterfront deck. Structural tempered panels, standoff or channel mounted with no top cap, leave the lake outlook essentially uninterrupted and take the wind off an exposed deck at the same time.

Cable Deck Railings

Marine grade stainless cable where a full glass specification is more than the setting calls for, such as a garden terrace or a secondary deck. Nearly invisible from any distance and considerably easier to keep clean than glass near the water.

Local Experts

Deck Railings Across Medina

Medina is small enough that every property is its own problem, so we bring no assumptions from one estate to the next. The deck’s relationship to the water, the seating positions, and the level changes across the terraces all shape what gets specified.

We work throughout the surrounding Points communities as well, in Clyde Hill, Yarrow Point, Hunts Point, and along the lakefront edge of West Bellevue, where the exposure and the expectations are much the same.

Two Directions

Two Directions for a Medina Deck Railing

Both directions are built to estate standard, and on a larger property they often appear on the same grounds in different places.

Modern Deck Railings

Frameless glass and slim metal, detailed so the hardware nearly disappears. This is what most Medina waterfront decks call for, since the brief is almost always to protect the outlook rather than to add another designed element to it.

Ornamental Deck Railings

Hand-detailed metal for the more formal homes and for garden terraces set away from the water. Pattern work and shaped elements finished to coordinate with the estate’s gates and other metalwork, so the deck belongs to the same scheme.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Gates, fencing, and railings are all fabricated in our own shop, so one finish and one design language can run from the driveway entrance through to the waterfront deck, which is usually what a property of this caliber calls for.

Yes, and on Medina projects it is the norm. We work from their drawings, issue shop drawings for approval before fabrication, and coordinate the finish with the rest of the specified metalwork so the deck railing belongs to the wider scheme rather than sitting apart from it.

We treat it as the correct specification here rather than an option. Standard stainless grades show spotting within a few seasons in constant lakeside humidity, and once it starts it does not reverse. Against the cost of the railing as a whole the difference is small, and it decides whether the hardware still looks right in ten years.

Frameless structural glass, standoff or channel mounted with no top cap. From a seated position on a deck it leaves the outlook essentially continuous, which is why it is the standard specification on Medina waterfront property. Stainless cable is the next least intrusive and needs less cleaning.
