About Deck Railings
Deck Railings in Cle Elum, WA
A mountain deck spends part of the year under snow and the rest of it as the best room in the house. The railing has to survive the first condition without spoiling the second, which is a narrower target than a lowland deck presents.
We measure on site, fabricate in our Kent shop, and bring the work over the Pass to install, in metal, cable, or glass. Mountain decks are frequently large and multi-level, and building to measured dimensions is what keeps a long run consistent.
Everything is detailed for deep frost, snow bearing against the balustrade, and repeated freeze thaw at the connections, which is where a railing built for a milder climate gives out first.
Why the Railing Matters
A Mountain Deck Railing Has Two Jobs
Most of the year the railing frames a ridgeline, and cable or glass keeps that continuous where a picket run would cut it into sections. That is the easy part, and the reason open systems dominate modern decks at Suncadia.
The harder part is winter. Snow loads against the balustrade, ice works into any gap, and freeze thaw cycles at the fixings loosen anything that was not detailed for it. A railing here is specified for the season it is not being used in, which is the opposite of how most people think about a deck.
What We Build
Deck Railing Materials
Three materials, weighed at elevation on how they handle a full winter as much as how they look.
Metal Deck Railings
Powder-coated steel in blackened tones sits naturally against timber and stone and carries the structural loads a snow bearing balustrade sees. Aluminum is the pick where spring melt keeps a deck wet for weeks and rust is the primary concern.
Glass Deck Railings
Tempered panels hold a ridgeline or valley view completely and have a practical benefit at elevation: they block wind on an exposed deck without closing the outlook down. The consideration is snow and ice loading against the panels, which we account for in the mounting.
Cable Deck Railings
The most common choice on modern mountain decks. Stainless cable sheds snow better than a solid or glass balustrade, nearly disappears against the landscape, and stands up well to a season of freeze thaw when the end posts are sized properly.

Deck Railings Across Cle Elum
At Suncadia and the developments around it, lodge-style and contemporary mountain homes favor cable and blackened metal that complement the timber and stone, usually on large multi-level decks.
In Cle Elum, Roslyn, and South Cle Elum, full-time homes and remodels bring a wider mix, and out in the river valley and the rural areas, decks tend toward durable metal built for hard use and harder winters.

Two Directions
Two Directions for a Mountain Deck Railing
Both are built for the climate first and the look second, which at elevation is the only sensible order.
Modern Deck Railings
Cable, glass, or slim blackened metal with clean horizontal lines, which is where most Suncadia decks land. It balances a timber and stone house with a lighter element and keeps the mountain view continuous across a long run.
Ornamental Deck Railings
Rustic and detailed metal for a lodge-style home. Blackened steel with forged detail and sturdier proportions than a city deck would use, since slim profiles look underscaled against heavy timber and a mountain backdrop.

Posted on Google Kristina G.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We're so thrilled with our new stair railings! Custom Railings WA and Mike's team did a high quality job from start to finish. We got the black powder coat finish with hemlock handrail in natural stain, which looks so elegant (see attached photos). The powder coat finish is really attractive, and we like that it's durable and not easily scratched. We were a little nervous that the wood color/characteristics on the top rail might turn out to be inconsistent across such a long run of railing, but the hand rails on all of the railings match beautifully. Thank you, Mike and team for taking such great care of us! Our new stairs are the perfect touch for our new farmhouse.Posted on Google Adele FesanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We used this company for the second time, and this was our first time ordering railing for an outdoor deck. The service was absolutely outstanding from start to finish. Communication was excellent, the team was easy to work with, and everything was completed exactly on schedule. The installation crew was highly professional, respectful, and left the area clean after completing the job. It was truly a pleasure working with a company that operates with such care and professionalism. The quality of the railing is top-notch — a very high-end product that exceeded our expectations. We would highly recommend this company and will definitely use them again in the future.Posted on Google Leyla HasanovaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We ordered glass railings for our parents’ home in Seattle. We were choosing between two options, glass or modern metal railings, and in the end we decided to go with glass. We’re extremely happy with that choice. The team helped us understand the differences, guided us through the design, and completed the installation on time. The railings look amazing. Great experience overall!Posted on Google Zamina BabayevaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. From the first day, they were professional and easy to work with. Mike always replied quickly, and the team made sure every detail was just how I wanted. In the end, we got beautiful glass railings that fit perfectly with our modern home in Bellevue. Thank you, Custom Railings WA, for making the whole process smooth and enjoyable!Posted on Google J BTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had such a good experience getting outdoor railings for my front concrete steps and for my stone steps in the back garden. I had put off doing this for so long and thought that railings might detract from the aesthetic look of my yard, but I was so wrong. I absolutely love my new railings, and loved working with all the guys who came out - to measure, to bend the metal and dig post holes, and finally to install the finished railings. Thank you!Posted on Google Jill SprattTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had a wonderful experience with Mike and his crew at Custom Railings WA. They replaced our outdated railing with a new custom designed railing that fit our dreams and our budget. Communication was always clear and timely. They even worked around the chaotic schedule of other contractors working on our bigger remodeling project that impacted when the railing could be installed. Very Happy with our railing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you travel to Suncadia and the surrounding area?
CustomRailingsWA2026-10-01T04:46:09-07:00Yes. We serve Cle Elum, Roslyn, South Cle Elum, Suncadia, and the wider Kittitas County area from our shop in Kent. We come out to measure, build and finish the railing on the west side, then bring it over the Pass to install.
Will snow damage a glass deck railing?
CustomRailingsWA2026-10-01T04:45:42-07:00Not the glass itself, which is tempered and structural. The consideration is snow and ice loading against the panels and how that load transfers into the mounting hardware and the deck framing. We account for it in the specification, which is the part a generic system does not address.
Cable or glass for a Suncadia deck?
CustomRailingsWA2026-10-01T04:44:57-07:00Cable sheds snow better and asks for much less maintenance, which is why it dominates modern mountain decks. Glass holds the view completely and blocks wind on an exposed deck, which is a genuine benefit at elevation. A number of properties use both, with glass on the windward side and cable elsewhere.
How do deck railings hold up to Cle Elum winters?
CustomRailingsWA2026-10-01T04:44:28-07:00Well, when they are built for it. The demands are snow bearing against the balustrade and repeated freeze thaw at the connections, and it is almost always the fixings and post bases that give out rather than the railing. We detail those specifically, which matters most on a home that sits empty through the season.
