They can work very well, with the design adjusted. In a newer house we typically pare the pattern back, using fewer elements and more open space so the railing reads as a sculptural feature against contemporary finishes rather than as traditional ornament transplanted from a period home.

Interior work is unaffected. For porch and exterior railings near Budd Inlet we specify for the moisture, using ornamental aluminum where its corrosion resistance helps or steel finished through a multi-step process, with exterior grade finishing over any hand applied detail.

For the Victorian and craftsman homes around the Capitol we can work from photographs or surviving pieces to match a historic pattern closely, echo ironwork elsewhere in the house, or design something new that is faithful to the period. Assembly and finishing are both done in our own shop, so period matching is well within our range.
